How to Care for Earthly Treasures

How to Care for Earthly Treasures

In this parable, found in Luke 16:1–2 is about taking care of earthly treasures.

Jesus tells His disciples about a wealthy man who had a manager looking after his property. in this story he shares How to Care for Earthly Treasures. The manager was accused of wasting these resources, and the rich man called him in to ask, “What’s this I hear about you? Give me an account of your management because you’re not going to be my manager anymore”

How to Care for Earthly Treasures

In this story, we can see ourselves as the manager and God as the rich man. It reminds us to hold earlth things lightly.

Ultimately, everything we have—money, possessions, even our talents—belongs to God. We’re here as caretakers, not owners. This idea can be a shift in perspective because many people see what they own as “theirs,” rather than as something they’re temporarily responsible for.

It’s easy to get attached to what we own and feel like it’s truly ours, but this story challenges that view.

If we think of ourselves as stewards, our role is to use what we have according to God’s purpose.

The manager in the story was reported for “squandering” his boss’s property, and we can sometimes be guilty of the same thing—using money or resources based on our own wants rather than what God might want.

This is often even more tempting for people who have more wealth. The more we have, the easier it is to use it in ways that focus on ourselves instead of for God’s purposes.

The wealthy man’s instruction to “give an account of your management” is a reminder that we will one day be asked to look back on how we handled what was entrusted to us. Are we using our resources responsibly, or are we just chasing after more for ourselves?

The manager in the story then acts “shrewdly,” but his cunning serves as a lesson for us. He’s resourceful in looking out for himself, putting a lot of effort into securing his future.

Imagine if people put that same kind of energy and effort into serving God’s mission instead of focusing on wealth for its own sake!

The world would be a very different place if more of us used our time and talents for God’s purposes.

Reflection

Take a moment today to reflect on the idea that you’re not the owner of your possessions—just the manager.

God doesn’t want us to be weighed down by attachment to wealth, so we’re free to use what we have in ways that honor His plan.

This doesn’t mean giving everything away. But rather regularly offering all that we have to God, asking for His guidance on how to use it.

Sometimes that means buying something new, other times it means donating more, or even simplifying our lives as an offering.

Money can’t buy happiness; only aligning ourselves with God’s will can bring the fulfilment we seek.

Prayer

God my all, you are the true Master of everything on earth. Help me to live as a faithful care taker of what I have, seeing it all as Yours, not mine. Free me from wasting what You’ve given me and guide me to use it only for Your glory. Jesus, I love You.
