As the new year approaches, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the past and setting resolutions for the future. We wonder how to plan your life. The key is to understand how to plan your life with God’s help.

It’s a time of renewal, a fresh chapter in the book of life. But what if this year, instead of relying solely on our own strength and plans. We approached our goals with God’s guidance.

Here’s how to plan your life with God’s help

1. Reflect on the Past Year with Gratitude and Humility

Before setting new goals, take time to reflect on the past year. What were the highlights? Where did you see God’s hand at work? What challenges did you face, and how did they shape you?

Spend time in prayer, thanking God for His blessings and seeking His perspective on your experiences. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have, and humility reminds us of our dependence on God. James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

2. Seek God’s Will

Planning for the future is important, but as Proverbs 19:21 reminds us, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Begin your planning process by asking God what His will is for your life. Pray for clarity and wisdom. James 1:5 encourages us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

Consider fasting or dedicating a specific time to prayer as you seek God’s direction. Journaling your prayers can also help you discern His guidance over time.

3. Set Christ-Centred Goals

Rather than setting goals that focus solely on personal achievements or material gains, prioritise goals that align with your faith. Ask yourself:

  • How can I grow spiritually this year?
  • How can I serve others and share God’s love?
  • Are there habits or sins I need to surrender to God?

For example, you might commit to deepening your prayer life, reading the Bible daily, or volunteering in your community. Matthew 6:33 reminds us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

4. Create a Plan with God at the Centre

Once you have clarity on your goals, create a plan to achieve them. But remember, your plan should be flexible and open to God’s leading. Include regular check-ins with yourself and God to ensure you’re staying on track.

Practical steps might include:

  • Scheduling daily quiet time for prayer and Bible reading.
  • Joining a small group or Bible study for accountability.
  • Breaking larger goals into manageable steps.

For instance, if your goal is to read the entire Bible, you might follow a year-long reading plan. If your goal is to strengthen your marriage, you could plan weekly date nights and pray together daily.

5. Trust God with the Outcome

One of the most freeing aspects of planning with God is knowing that the results are ultimately in His hands. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Release your need for control and trust that God’s plan is better than anything you could imagine. Even if things don’t go as you expected, He is working all things for your good (Romans 8:28).

6. Cultivate a Heart of Obedience

As you move forward, strive to maintain a heart that is sensitive to God’s leading. Sometimes, God may redirect your path or ask you to step out in faith. Be willing to say yes, even when it’s uncomfortable or uncertain.

Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commands.” Obedience is a tangible expression of our trust and love for God. When we follow His lead, we can be confident that we are walking in His will.

7. Surround Yourself with Godly Community

Planning and pursuing your goals is easier when you have the support of others who share your faith. Seek out a community of believers who can encourage, challenge, and pray for you. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Share your goals with trusted friends or mentors, and invite them to hold you accountable. Celebrate progress together and lean on each other during challenges.

8. Celebrate Milestones and Give Glory to God

As you achieve your goals, take time to celebrate and thank God for His faithfulness. Recognise that every success is a result of His provision and grace. Psalm 34:1 says, “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.”

Sharing your testimony of God’s work in your life can also inspire others to seek Him and trust in His plans.

9. Be Prepared for Challenges

Even with the best plans, challenges will arise. But when you plan with God, you can face obstacles with confidence and peace. Remember, God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

When difficulties come, turn to God in prayer and seek His wisdom. Reflect on His promises and remind yourself that He is with you every step of the way.

10. Keep an Eternal Perspective

Finally, remember that our ultimate goal is not earthly success but eternal significance. Colossians 3:2 advises, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” As you plan your life for the new year, keep eternity in mind. Strive to live in a way that honours God and points others to Him.

Planning your life for the new year with God’s help is not about achieving perfection or controlling every detail. It’s about aligning your heart with His, trusting in His goodness, and walking in obedience. As you step into the new year, invite God to be your guide, and watch how He works in and through your life.
