65. It’s Time to Come Home to God

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us a beautiful story about a shepherd with 100 sheep. It’s Time to Come Home to God. When one goes astray, the shepherd doesn’t stay with the 99, but goes searching until he finds the lost one. And when he does, he joyfully carries it home, inviting his friends and neighbours to celebrate with him. (Luke 15:4–6)

He Comes to Find Us

Some of the great saints teach us that the number 100 symbolises perfection. 100 represents not just the saints in Heaven, but also the angels. The one lost sheep stands for each one of us, as we journey through life. Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, looks for us with loving care, determined to bring us back home.

First, notice that the shepherd’s search is driven by love, not anger. This is so important to understand because when we stray, we might fear God’s judgment. But in reality, God doesn’t sit in judgment. He’s on a mission to find us with compassion. He came to us in our brokenness. He came to take on our human nature and endured great suffering just to bring us back to Him.

Upon His Shoulders

Another beautiful image in this parable is the shepherd gently picking up the lost sheep and carrying it home.

Sometimes, we think we need to make our way back to God by our own strength. But the truth is, God is always there. God is always ready to lift us up and carry us back, if only we stop running.

Our role is simply to surrender to His merciful embrace and let Him minister to us. His effort is all-encompassing, and our task is to trust and allow Him to lead us back.

Lastly, the parable tells us that the shepherd rejoices when he finds the lost sheep. And he invites everyone to join in his joy. Of course, we will rejoice when we are carried back into the safety of God’s Kingdom. But our joy is a response to the Shepherd’s joy. His heart overflows with gratitude when we allow Him to carry us home. “Rejoice with me,” He says, “for I have found my lost sheep.”

It’s Time to Come Home

Reflect today on the loving image of the Good Shepherd. Think about how this story stirs your heart, your memories, your fears, and your hopes. Jesus desires to meet you right where you are, no matter how far you’ve strayed. His compassion is the key to opening the door for Him to come to you.

Don’t run away, stay in His presence. Listen to His voice, and say “Yes” as He gently lifts you up and carries you home.
