1. Method: Warning vs. System

Jesus’ Teaching:
Jesus did not present a formal doctrine of hell. He taught through parables, metaphors, and prophetic warnings, using familiar Jewish imagery to call people to repentance and ethical transformation.

“The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news.” (Mark 1:15)

His focus was not the mechanics of the afterlife but the urgency of moral response in the present.

Later Church Doctrine:
From the 2nd century onward, Christian theologians began systematising beliefs. By the time of Augustine (4th–5th century), hell had become a defined, literal, and eternal place of conscious torment for the wicked.

2. Language: Symbolic vs. Literal

Jesus:
Jesus primarily used Gehenna, a real valley outside Jerusalem, symbolising destruction and judgment.

“Fear him who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.” (Matthew 10:28)

The emphasis is on destruction, not endless suffering.

Later Doctrine:
The church increasingly interpreted Jesus’ imagery literally, blending biblical language with Greek philosophical ideas about the immortality of the soul, which required eternal punishment.

3. Duration of Punishment

Jesus:
Jesus spoke of aionios punishment (Matthew 25:46), a term that can mean age-lasting rather than endless. He never explicitly defined punishment as eternal conscious torment.

Later Doctrine:
Augustine argued that punishment must be eternal in duration, paralleling eternal life. This interpretation became dominant in Western Christianity.

4. Purpose: Repentance vs. Retribution

Jesus:
Judgment warnings served a restorative purpose, provoking repentance, humility, and justice.

“I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” (Matthew 9:13)

Later Doctrine:
Hell became primarily retributive, emphasising divine justice satisfied through endless punishment.

5. Focus: Kingdom of God vs. Afterlife Fear

Jesus:
Jesus preached overwhelmingly about the Kingdom of God, not hell.

Later Doctrine:
Fear of hell became a central motivator in preaching, art, and evangelism.

Conclusion

Theologians agree that Jesus warned of real judgment but left the nature of final punishment open to God’s mercy.

Later church doctrine filled in the gaps, shaped by philosophy, culture, and theological debate.

Understanding this distinction helps modern readers engage Jesus’ message with greater historical and theological clarity.
