The story of Christmas begins with Mary, a young woman living in the town of Nazareth. One ordinary day, while she was busy with her daily chores, a bright light filled the room. It was an angel. This angel was an extraordinary messenger sent by God with an important announcement:
“Mary, you are going to have a baby. And not just any baby—this child will be a king.”
In the months that followed, it became clear that the angel’s words were true. Mary was pregnant. She and her partner, Joseph, prepared for the baby’s arrival: they spoke to the midwife, gathered tiny clothes, and made plans for the birth.
Then, just weeks before the baby was due, an unexpected challenge arrived. A decree from the king demanded that everyone return to their home cities to be counted. Mary and Joseph would have to travel to Bethlehem—and with the baby due any day, it was far from ideal.
Despite the hardship, they set off on foot, determined to obey the law. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the town was overflowing with visitors. Every inn was full. Exhausted, Mary and Joseph wandered the streets, desperate for shelter, until a kind woman offered them a place in a simple shed.
It was there, in humble surroundings among animals, that Mary gave birth to Jesus. With limited resources, she wrapped him in simple cloths and laid him in a manger.
At first, it might have seemed that the angel’s promise had gone awry. How could this be the birth of a king? But in truth, everything had unfolded exactly as God had intended. Jesus was not born to a palace; he came into the world for ordinary people. Just plain folks like people like the residents of Bethlehem, and people like you and me.

The Bible calls Jesus “the light of the world” because he reveals God’s presence and love to everyone. This is beautifully symbolised in the Christingle:
- The orange represents the world.
- Four cocktail sticks point to the North, South, East, and West, symbolizing the corners of the earth.
- Sweets on the sticks remind us of the good gifts God gives.
- Red tape around the orange signifies God’s love.
- The candle on top is the most important part—it represents Jesus, who brings light to a world living in darkness.
When Jesus was born, he illuminated the world with God’s love. The Christingle reminds us that God invites everyone to know him, learn from him, and experience his light in our lives.
This is the essence of Christmas: a light shining in the darkness, offered to all, through the birth of a humble baby who would grow to change the world.
