Celebrate Christ the King by reflecting on Jesus’ words from the Cross and discovering how His Kingdom can begin in your heart today through surrender and faith.
Christ the King and the Hope of His Eternal Kingdom
“Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
These words were spoken by Jesus from the Cross and are among the most profound in all of Scripture. Hanging between two thieves, Jesus revealed the heart of God: mercy offered even in the final hours, salvation extended to anyone who turns to Him with sincerity.
The two thieves represent all of us. One mocked, demanding that Jesus come down from the Cross and save Himself. The other humbly prayed: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”
His simple, sincere request became a prayer for eternal life, and Jesus answered it immediately.
So often, we concern ourselves with worldly matters and daily goods while forgetting the weight of eternal ones. But on this final Sunday of the Liturgical Year, as the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King, we are invited to renew our understanding of Jesus’ kingship and our place within His Kingdom.
Christ’s Throne Is the Cross
Nothing pleases the Lord more than saving His children. In love, He embraced suffering and death so that we could share in the eternal joy of heaven. Unlike earthly kings who reign with power, armies, or wealth, Christ’s throne was the Cross—His crown, one of thorns; His weapon, sacrificial love.
Yet from that place of humiliation came the greatest victory:
The redemption of the world.
Jesus is the glorious King of the Universe, whose majesty and authority surpass all imagination. His reign is eternal, and when He returns at the end of time, He will establish His Kingdom in fullness. His Kingdom is of justice, truth, mercy, and perfect love.
But this Kingdom is not only a future hope.
It must begin now, within our own hearts.
Allowing Christ to Reign in Our Lives
Whenever we allow Jesus to exercise His kingship in our lives, the Kingdom of God begins to grow within us. God desires to order our thoughts, actions, and choices according to His perfect will. He invites us to surrender, completely and confidently.
This surrender means:
- Offering Him our hearts, minds, and bodies
- Allowing His mercy to reshape our lives
- Submitting our desires to His perfect love
- Trusting His plans over our own
- Letting His grace transform us from within
When we embrace His kingship, we begin living as citizens of His eternal Kingdom even now.
Earthly Governments vs. the King of Kings. Human history shows that no earthly government or leader is perfect. Even democracy exists largely as a safeguard against the abuse of power. But at the end of time, governance will be placed in the hands of the only One worthy of absolute authority:
Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Under His rule, humanity will flourish. Justice will be perfect. Love will be complete. Truth will reign without opposition. Christ alone possesses the wisdom, power, and love needed to govern all creation.
Living With Supernatural Hope
Though we cannot fully comprehend the glory that awaits us, we are invited to live with supernatural hope. Christ will return in splendor and majesty to judge the living and the dead, and His Kingdom will never end.
Until that day, our mission is clear:
to allow the Kingdom of grace and mercy to begin within us.
Let Christ rule your soul.
Surrender your thoughts, your will, your whole being to Him.
Live with confidence that His reign brings life, freedom, and salvation.
A Prayer to Christ the King
My Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe,
I place my total trust in You.
I surrender all that I am into Your hands.
Establish Your kingship in my heart today.
Rule over my thoughts, my desires, my life.
Jesus, remember me when You come into Your glorious Kingdom.
You alone are worthy of my obedience, my love, and my devotion.
Amen.
