Luke 17:17–19

The Gospel reading focuses on an encounter between Jesus and ten lepers, emphasizing the importance of gratitude. After Jesus healed all ten, only one of them—a foreigner—returned to express thanks.

Jesus noted the absence of the other nine, asking, “Where are they?” This highlights a significant theme: while all were healed, only one truly recognized and appreciated the meaning of that miracle.

The actions of the grateful leper are remarkable. He returned to Jesus, glorified God, raised his voice in thanks, fell at Jesus’ feet, and expressed his gratitude. This serves as a powerful reminder for us.

Often, we might overlook the care and love we receive, much like children who sometimes forget to say “thank you” to their parents. In our spiritual lives, it’s easy to take God’s blessings for granted, viewing them as things we deserve rather than gifts of grace.

Gratitude

Expressing gratitude to God is not about fulfilling a requirement—God doesn’t need our thanks to feel valued. Instead, it’s about our need to cultivate gratitude in our lives. Acknowledging that God’s love is a gift we don’t earn helps ground us in truth. Realizing that everything we have comes from Him prompts us to respond with genuine thankfulness.

Gratitude is essential because it reflects our understanding of reality. We should, like the leper, always return to Jesus after receiving blessings, glorifying Him passionately. Bowing in gratitude reminds us that all we are and have are gifts from God.

Take a moment to reflect on your own gratitude. Do you resonate more with the one grateful leper or with the nine who forgot to thank Jesus? If you find you struggle with gratitude, think about that leper’s deep appreciation. His response brought him not just physical healing, but a faith that saved his soul.

As we consider our own lives, let’s strive to imitate that deep gratitude. Lord, thank You for Your abundant mercy. Without You, I am nothing, but with you, I receive everything I need.

May I always recognize my reliance on Your grace. Help me to I always respond with heartfelt gratitude, nurturing my faith and soul along the way. Jesus, I love and trust in You.
