What is the purpose of a dictionary? A dictionary tells us what a word means.
A dictionary shows us how to spell words–and even how to pronounce them.
A dictionary can help us to understand lots of things about words–about language.
And that is what Pentecost is about- God uniting divided people because of different languages- now unite all under the language of God, which is faith, hope and love.
So let’s dive into this study and take a look at Ezekiel 37:1-14 and Acts 2:1-21– please read both first.
Ezekiel 37:1-14
Ezekiel 37:1-14 paints a vivid picture of restoration and renewal. In this passage, Ezekiel finds himself in a valley filled with dry bones—a symbol of despair and hopelessness.
Yet, through the power of God’s Spirit, these bones are brought back to life, forming a vast army. This powerful imagery speaks to the transformative power of God’s grace to breathe life into the most desolate situations.
As Christians, we, too, may find ourselves in valleys of despair, surrounded by dry bones of broken dreams, shattered hopes, and spiritual dryness.
Yet Ezekiel’s vision reminds us that God can bring life from death, hope from despair, and beauty from ashes.
In our own lives, we may experience moments of spiritual dryness or feel disconnected from God’s presence. But like the dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision, we can trust that God’s Spirit is always at work, breathing new life into our souls and revitalising our faith.
This passage challenges us to trust in God’s power to bring about restoration and renewal, even in the most unlikely circumstances.
Acts 2:1-21
It is an exciting story in the Bible about language and how God helps us understand things.
Many people from around the world had come together in Jerusalem. They spoke many different languages.
But the Holy Spirit — God’s Spirit — made it possible for Jesus’ disciples to speak to each person in that person’s own language. That was a real miracle.
God gives the Holy Spirit to every Christian through baptism. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God within each one of us. The Holy Spirit helps us know God — and understand what God wants us to do. The Holy Spirit also makes it possible for us to do great things–things that we couldn’t ordinarily do.
At the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave the disciples the power to speak in languages that they had never learned.
Ezekiel 37:1-14 reminds us that no situation is beyond the reach of God’s grace and that, through faith and obedience, we can experience the fullness of life that God desires for us.
Let us, therefore, hold fast to the hope that God is always at work, breathing life into our dry bones and leading us into a future filled with promise and possibility.
I don’t know what the Holy Spirit will empower you to do, but I know that it will empower you to do great things for Jesus.
They might seem like great things–like speaking in languages that you have never learned. Or they might seem more ordinary, like helping someone who needs help.
As you listen to that Spirit within, you will be guided in the ways of God.
